The Education Ministry is drafting a Prime Minister's Office regulation concerning education for some 140,000 stateless children in the country, Deputy Education Minister Chaiwut Bannawat said on Tuesday.
Mr Chaiwut said this to Weerawich Thianchainan, director of the Thailand office of the commission on refugees and displaced persons of the United States, who called on him to get information on the ministry's policy on education for stateless children in Thailand.
The regulation being drafted will be applied to some 100,000 stateless children at learning centres run by private organisations and 40,000 others at refugees holding centres to ensure they are provided with the same basic education as that given to Thai children, he said.
Moreover, about 60,000 children of immigrants who entered the country legally have already been given the same right to education as Thai children
